My languages in my life

With the development of the Chinese, young people now speak Mandarin more than before; under formal situations, I have to use Mandarin, and I cannot ignore the subject and object in my sentences. After coming into America, I need to use American English as my language of life instead of Mandarin and dialect.

In our generation the Chinese government begins to make Mandarin more widespread; we are encouraged to only speak Mandarin in schools, and we are taught about the benefits of speaking Mandarin: making the communication between people from different parts of China be much easier. As this result, I commonly speak Mandarin among friends, classmates, or other people with the same or lower generations; on the other hand, I speak more dialect with elders because when they got the education they were taught in their native pronunciation; this makes them hard to express their ideas in Mandarin, and I talk with them in dialect as a way to show my respect to them.

When I speak formal in China, I have to speak like governmental officers; I need to use more complex/academic words; I should speak it in Mandarin; I cannot ignore the subjects and objects in my speaking, and I should reduce the use of mimetic word.

I speak three kinds of languages in my life: Mandarin, dialect, and American English. Mandarin is the tool that helps me to solve the problems in communications in China as the most widely spread language among Chinese people, but if I am in my hometown, it makes me feel free and relax when I speak in my native pronunciation because it gives a feeling that I am a member of this group of citizens. I have to speak much American English now because I live in the US, English becomes my second language of my life, I should use it everywhere in America even in some places in Chinatowns.

Brief Introduction of myself

Hi everyone, my name is Xiaowu Li (call me Lee is OK),and I am a freshman in the University of Delaware. I come from Suzhou, China, and I have been in the US for more than 10 months. My hometown is famous for its gardens and rivers, and it is one of the most beautiful cities in China. There is a saying in China that '' There is heaven in the sky, but we have Su and Hang on the earth.''; Su means Suzhou. I have been meeting a lot of American students in the university, and they are all friendly to me. I hope I will have a nice college life here.
